How to back up Discord server messages
Does Discord have a backup feature?
Discord doesn't offer a way to back up a server's messages. Server templates copy channels and roles but not messages, and the data package only includes messages you sent. Exporting channels is the practical way to keep a copy.
Step-by-step (Chat Exporter)
- 1
Install DiscordSuite and activate Chat Exporter or All tools (see pricing).
- 2
Open any channel in the server on discord.com in Chrome.
- 3
Click the DiscordSuite icon.
- 4
Tick Export several channels, then select the text channels, announcement channels and active threads to back up.
- 5
Choose a format. JSON keeps the most data; HTML is the easiest to read.
- 6
Tick Download attachments to save images and files.
- 7
Click Export. The progress bar shows which channel it's on ("Channel 3 of 12"), and each channel saves as its own ZIP with the export file and its attachments together.
What Chat Exporter's backup tools do
Several channels at once
pick any of a server's text channels, announcement channels and active threads and export them in one run. Channels that can't hold messages are skipped.
Attachments in one ZIP
every image, video and file is packed with the export, and in HTML exports the links and previews open the local files after unzipping.
Only new messages
tick Only new messages since last export on later runs. DiscordSuite remembers where the last export of each channel stopped, so weekly or monthly backups don't repeat old messages.
Unlimited messages
no per-export limit, so a channel's full history fits in one export.
Want only the files, without the chat? Use media-only export.
Messages vs server settings
DiscordSuite backs up messages and attachments, not server settings. It doesn't copy roles, permissions or channel structure, and it can't restore a server. For settings, use Discord's server templates.
Free plan option
On the free plan, export one channel at a time, with a message limit per export, using date windows for longer histories. Server owners can also export the member list (free with a member limit per export) and download the server's emojis and stickers (free with a limit per download).
Tips for a reliable backup
- Export in JSON and HTML: JSON for the full data, HTML for reading.
- Store backups somewhere other than your downloads folder.
- Large servers take time because Discord limits request speed. Let the export run.
Frequently asked questions
Can you back up a Discord server?
You can back up its messages and attachments by exporting channels. With Chat Exporter (or All tools), select several channels and threads and export them in one run. Discord doesn't back up messages for you.
Does DiscordSuite download images and files from Discord?
Yes, with Chat Exporter (or All tools). Every attachment is packed with the export in one ZIP, and the HTML links open the local files after unzipping.
Can I run incremental backups?
Yes. Chat Exporter's "Only new messages since last export" exports only what's new in each channel.
Can DiscordSuite restore a deleted server?
No. It creates files you can read and keep; it doesn't rebuild servers.
Can I back up a server I don't own?
You can export channels your account can read. Follow the server's rules and Discord's Terms.
Does a backup include deleted messages?
No. Only messages that exist when you export.
